Adaptive Steel Shooting Techniques

$289.00

This course is presented as a means of distilling the foundational process of the handgun presentation and the shot process employment in a rapidly unfolding, and demanding set of circumstances. The course will utilize the Steel Shooting competition course to refine the draw stroke, trigger press, sight acquisition, slide lock reloads, strong hand and weak hand shooting, and movement to cover. This course will not focus on tactics so much as faster shooting with acceptable accuracy for the situation.  Enrollment for this class is limited to students who have had some basic training and can safely draw to a target and reliably hit an 8 inch circle at 15 yards.

The Steel Shooting is a fast-paced shooting competition with (as the name implies) all steel targets. There are eight stages. Each stage has five targets. One target is designated a “Stop Plate” which must be shot last. All other plates are typically engaged as the competitor desires. Each stage is shot five times. For the competition, the total time of the shooters four best strings on each stage is added up. The lowest time is the winner. While this class is not focused on competition shooting, it will make use of the refined shooting techniques often used by top shooters.

Equipment:

Sturdy belt with a holster and two magazine pouches. Serpa and similar holsters are not allowed unless issued by your agency.

Service pistol in 9mm or larger caliber.

Three or more magazines.

400 rounds of factory ammunition or factory reloaded ammunition.

Ammunition (both factory new and factory reloaded) may be available for purchase at the range pro shop for those who wish to buy it on site. We strongly suggest you arrange with the pro shop for the ammunition purchase prior to the class, as it can sell out quickly. The ammunition count is based on a level of accuracy that assumes a majority of first round hits. It is very possible/likely that students will exceed the 400 round approximation if they go to the edge of their abilities. If you are anxious about running short of ammunition, bring more.

Eye protection. This must be ballistic rated eye wear as the entire course will feature steel targets. Splatter and splash back, while not common, does occur.

Ear protection. Electronic hearing protection is preferred.

Suitable range attire. Ballistic vests may be worn if the student wishes to train in their full equipment.

Bring water and food. We will not be leaving the range for lunch. The meal break is usually abbreviated.

Students will need the following:

  • Firearm (semi-auto or revolver) no rim fire & ammunition(100 rounds) for the second half of the class. Please contact the range in case you need firearm rental.
  • Eye & ear protection
  • Knee pads if possible
  • Holster
  •  2-3 magazines or speedloaders
  • Magazine pouch
  • Sturdy belt
  • Ball cap or Boonie style hat
  • Note taking material
  • Comfortable clothing to move freely in
  • Sunscreen
  • Snacks & water
  • And of course positive attitude
