The Basic Handgun course is a beginners’ handgun shooting program where you will learn pistol shooting basics or perfect the groundwork for handgun mastery. The course is suitable for all levels of experience including the novice and those comfortable with their handgun. If you have never shot or held a handgun before, or want to strengthen your handgun shooting skill set, you will find this course useful. In this one-day beginners’ shooting class we will cover basic handgun safety, nomenclature, loading, and unloading, the foundational marksmanship skills (grip, stance, sight picture/alignment, trigger manipulation and more), as well as reloading under stress and presentation from the holster. We will also practice manipulations for malfunctions.

Beginner Handgun Training

In the course, you’ll learn important gun safety tips and learn how to rightfully use a firearm in a self-defense situation according to local gun rules and regulations. This new shooter training is an excellent starting point for advanced gun training and defensive pistol training as well as shooting competitions.

Prerequisites

None. Normally, each student supplies their own handgun. Otherwise, gun rental is available at the Pro Shop on site, provided you are a legal firearm owner. Please clean and lubricate your gun in advance of the course or bring your gun cleaning kit with you.

Class Schedule

0800 – Introduction and safety brief
0830 – Handgun nomenclature and basic functions/cycle
0845 – Loading and unloading in an administrative setting. Dry practice
0915 – Fundamentals of marksmanship, lecture
0945 – Dry practice of fundamentals
1000 – Break
1010 – Live fire, marksmanship fundamentals. Various ranges
1100 – Presentations from the holster. Dry practice and live fire
1130 – Lunch break
1215 – Live fire practice of fundamentals of marksmanship and presentations from the holster
1300 – Slide lock reloading under stress, lecture
1315 – Slide lock reloading, dry practice
1330 – Slide lock reloading, live fire. This block will also stress marksmanship and presentations from the holster
1400 – Tactical reloading, lecture
1415 – Tactical reloading, dry practice
1430 – Live fire from 5 yards to 15 yards
1500 – Break
1510 – Type 1 malfunctions, lecture, and dry practice
1520 – Type 2 malfunctions, lecture, and dry practice
1530 – Type 3 malfunctions, lecture, and dry practice
1545 – Malfunction drills, live fire
1615 – Live fire drills

Bring The Following

  1. Handgun. Centerfire only, no rimfire handguns
  2. Three magazines or three-speed loaders if using a revolver
  3. Minimum 300 rounds ammunition
  4. Proper clothing for the weather
  5. Snacks, lunch and plenty of water
  6. Notebook and pen
  7. Eye and ear protection (available to rent on site)
  8. Sunscreen, hat, long-sleeve shirt, long pants, training shoes
  9. Belt, holster, magazine pouch or other means of carrying additional ammunition
  10. Gloves and elbow pad (optional)

Join our Veteran Instructor Mike to get your skills upgraded! Mike Lazarus holds 27 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, as well as 19 years SWAT including sniper, assaulter, team sergeant, FBI certified firearm instructor, MP5 and Sub Machine gun instructor, Defensive tactics instructor, Police Academy instructor, 13 years of experience in the US Army with multiple overseas deployments. Airborne, SOTIC, PSD, SRT, small arms armorer, various other military schools, Faculty member in California State University, Northridge and Ventura College. Hobbies include outdoor sports, hunting, competitive shooting.
