    Because this class will utilize steel targets, center fire rifle ammunition is prohibited. Students can bring a shotgun (with both buck and bird shot) pistol caliber carbines, or .22 LR rifles. All of these types of firearms, including AR-15 pattern .22 LR Rifles, are available for rent at the pro shop.

    This class will focus on the short-range marksmanship problems associated with using a long gun (shotgun or rifle) in an urban environment. Students will learn techniques for using the long gun effectively indoors, in outdoor close confined spaces, and in and around automobiles.

    Students will also learn how and when to transition from their long gun to a holstered pistol.

    This class is geared towards the use of any long gun. A semi-auto rifle, bolt action rifle, lever action rifle, or shotgun will all be fine. The goal of the class is to give the student portable skills that can be applied to whatever tool they have on hand.

    Prerequisites

    Previous Firearms training with both the long gun (either rifle or shotgun) and handgun. Students must be comfortable drawing the handgun from a holster on the range and around various obstacles.

    Equipment

    1. Long gun with 200 rounds of ammunition and a sling.
    2. Pistol with 50 rounds of ammunition, holster spare magazine and magazine pouch.
    3. Ballistic rated eye protection.
    4. Hearing protection.
    5. Water and snacks.
    6. Range appropriate clothing.
    7. Notepad
    8. Knee and elbow pads are not required; however, many people find them comfortable for kneeling positions.

    Instructor Bio

    Mike Lazarus holds 27 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, as well as 19 years SWAT including sniper, assaulter, team sergeant, FBI certified firearm instructor, MP5 and Sub Machine gun instructor, Defensive tactics instructor, Police Academy instructor, 13 years of experience in the US Army with multiple overseas deployments. Airborne, SOTIC, PSD, SRT, small arms armorer, various other military schools, Faculty member in California State University, Northridge and Ventura College. Hobbies include outdoor sports, hunting, competitive shooting.

  • The Pump Action Shotgun is one of the most misunderstood firearms. The pump action shotgun offers flexibility in selection of ammunition for different objectives. In this course will learn the safe deployment of a pump action shotgun and develop the Combat Mindset for crisis survival. This course will include basic shotgun fundamentals, patterning and ammunition selection, malfunction clearances, carry methods and cleaning and maintenance. The shotgun as a home defense firearm will be covered and the student will learn basic home defense tactics.     1. Pump action Shotgun (12ga. Or 20 ga.) with attached sling

    Instructor Bio

    Ron Clayton is currently employed  with a local Sheriff’s Department with 25 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, with a varied list of assignments including SWAT, FTO, Patrol, Detectives and Academy Instructor.  He is a FBI certified firearm instructor, California POST Rifle instructor, Defensive Tactics instructor and Stop the Bleed instructor.

    Ron recently retired from the California Air National Guard after 22 years of service (Active and Reserve)  including 4 deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.  During his deployments, he was assigned as a Dedicated Marksman and Combat LifeSaver.   While at home station, Ron taught M4 rifle, M9 handgun, and M870 shotgun, Urban Environment Tactics, Concealed Carry, Trauma Care and Combatives.  As a member of the California Emergency Response and Force Protection Training Cadre, Ron assisted in developing the training curriculum for National Guard members responding to civil disturbances and natural disasters.  He also was the lead instructor to Ukraine in the National Guard’s Partnership for Peace program, sharing western style Law Enforcement and Tactics to the Ukraine military.  

    His hobbies include reading about history, shooting, martial arts and currently holds a black belt (2nd Dan) in Taiho Jutsu and has trained in Krav Maga and Brazilian Ju Jitsu.

  • The Intermediate Shotgun Course is designed for the shooter that wants to improve their skills using the shotgun.  The student should be familiar with the operation of their shotgun and be proficient with the basic fundamentals and safety with firearms. This course will review shotgun skills with emphasis on defensive tactics and using the shotgun in an urban environment.

    The student will learn to proficiently operate the shotgun as a home defense firearm, the proper use of cover and concealment, shooting on the move and positional shooting.

    Prerequisites

    Have a solid foundation and understanding of firearms safety and basic knowledge of how to operate the shotgun (pump action, semi-auto, etc.).

    1. Shotgun (gauge of choice, cleaned and lubed) with sling
    2. Ammo pouch or a way to carry extra ammo
    3. 25 rounds of buck shot (#4 or 00 buck)
    4. 150 bird shot, NO STEEL SHOT
    5. 10 slugs
    6. Eye and Ear protection
    7. Hat with brim
    8. Knee pads (optional)
    9. Recoil pad (optional)
    10. Snacks, water, lunch (there is no food services local)
    11. Proper range attire/comfortable clothing for the weather

    The course covers intermediate shooting techniques, team drills, an obstacle course to take the shooter to a higher level of shotgun comprehension.
