• extended range handgun course
    This long range handgun course is not offered very often and is limited in class size to a maximum of 10 students. The class will focus on using the ballistics of the individual’s handgun choice for shooting out to 200 yards. The Extended range handgun class is a great class for those interested in handgun hunting, as well as those who want a different and more challenging perspective for handgun shooting. After shooting at targets over 100 yards away with your handgun, 25-yard targets will seem pedestrian. Prerequisites: Knowledge of handgun shooting basics. Equipment:
    • Handgun in centerfire,
    • Handgun caliber. Rifle caliber handguns will not be suitable for this class,
    • Single Shot, Semi-Auto, Single Action and DA/SA revolvers are all suitable for this class,
    • 200 rounds of quality ammunition,
    • 2 or more magazines for the Semi-Auto,
    • Speed strips or speed loaders for revolvers will be helpful. Otherwise the students will need some method of carrying additional ammunition, such as a cargo pocket, dump pouch etc,
    • Eye and ear protection,
    • Note taking materials,
    • Water, lunch and snacks,
    • Hat, sunblock, comfortable boots.
    0800-0830 Welcome. Safety brief. 0830-1100 Review of marksmanship fundamentals with emphasis on sights use and distilled trigger press. Groups on paper at 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, and 50 yards. 1100- 1230 Supported Position shooting, kneeling, sitting, prone, and various field positions on paper at 50 and 100 yards. 1230- 1300 Lunch Break 1300- 1400 On paper at 150 and 200 yards. 1400 -1530 Steel targets (100 to 200 yards) from various field positions 1530 to 1600 25-yard grouping exercise on paper.     Mike Lazarus holds 27 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, as well as 19 years SWAT including sniper, assaulter, team sergeant, FBI certified firearm instructor, MP5 and Sub Machine gun instructor, Defensive tactics instructor, Police Academy instructor, 13 years of experience in the US Army with multiple overseas deployments. Airborne, SOTIC, PSD, SRT, small arms armorer, various other military schools, Faculty member in California State University, Northridge and Ventura College.     The Basic Handgun course is a beginners’ handgun shooting program where you will learn pistol shooting basics or perfect the groundwork for handgun mastery. The course is suitable for all levels of experience including the novice and those comfortable with their handgun. If you have never shot or held a handgun before, or want to strengthen your handgun shooting skill set, you will find this course useful. In this one-day beginners’ shooting class we will cover basic handgun safety, nomenclature, loading, and unloading, the foundational marksmanship skills (grip, stance, sight picture/alignment, trigger manipulation and more), as well as reloading under stress and presentation from the holster. We will also practice manipulations for malfunctions. If you are looking for a handgun safety class, this is your best starter class for handling a gun safely and effectively. The basic firearm training course is the best way for new shooters to receive professional firearm training. In this course, you’ll learn important gun safety tips and learn how to use a firearm in a self-defense situation according to local gun rules and regulations. This new shooter training is an excellent starting point for further advanced gun training, defensive pistol training, as well as shooting competitions.

    Prerequisites

    None. Students can supply their own handgun. Otherwise, gun rental is available at the Pro Shop on site. Please clean and lubricate your gun in advance of the course or bring your gun cleaning kit with you. Class Begins at 9am check-in 8:45am Hours: 9 AM - 1 PM

    Instructor Bio

    Ron Clayton is currently employed  with a local Sheriff’s Department with 25 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, with a varied list of assignments including SWAT, FTO, Patrol, Detectives and Academy Instructor.  He is a FBI certified firearm instructor, California POST Rifle instructor, Defensive Tactics instructor and Stop the Bleed instructor.

    Ron recently retired from the California Air National Guard after 22 years of service (Active and Reserve)  including 4 deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.  During his deployments, he was assigned as a Dedicated Marksman and Combat LifeSaver.   While at home station, Ron taught M4 rifle, M9 handgun, and M870 shotgun, Urban Environment Tactics, Concealed Carry, Trauma Care and Combatives.  As a member of the California Emergency Response and Force Protection Training Cadre, Ron assisted in developing the training curriculum for National Guard members responding to civil disturbances and natural disasters.  He also was the lead instructor to Ukraine in the National Guard’s Partnership for Peace program, sharing western style Law Enforcement and Tactics to the Ukraine military.  

    His hobbies include reading about history, shooting, martial arts and currently holds a black belt (2nd Dan) in Taiho Jutsu and has trained in Krav Maga and Brazilian Ju Jitsu.

  • Many shooters do not get to practice handgun presentation from the holster as often as they would like. And they do not have the opportunity to practice with an instructor or coach helping to refine the draw stroke. This class will provide the students with the chance to refine their draw stroke, with an eye to getting a solid first round, or controlled pair on target, in the most efficient manner possible. This class will focus on the draw stroke under the following conditions. Open holster. With turns from 90 degrees and 180 degrees. Open front concealment garment. Closed front (such as a tee shirt, sweat shirt etcetera) garment. Seated positions. Many of the exercises will be practiced both dry and with live fire.

    Please bring the following to the course:

    1. Handgun. Center fire only, no rimfire handguns. 2. Three magazines or three speed loaders if using a revolver. 3. 300 rounds minimum ammo. 4. Proper clothing for the weather. 5. Snacks. lunch and plenty of water. 6. Please clean your gun in advance of the course or bring your gun cleaning kit with you. 7. Notebook and pen. 8. Eye and ear protection. 9. Sunscreen, hats, long sleeves shirts, long pants, training shoes. 10. Belt, holster, magazine pouch or other means of carrying additional ammunition, weapon cleaning equipment. No cross-draw holsters will be allowed. Additionally, you will need a jacket or shirt that opens to the front that can be closed. A tee-shirt or other similar cover garment can also be helpful.
