This is not just a tactics class. The goal of this class is to give the student the mental tools and response skills for an intruder in the home, or attempting to enter your home.
Attendees should be familiar with Basic Handgun skills and be a comfortable and safe shooter. Advanced shooting skills are
not required for this class. While this class will utilize a handgun for instructional purposes, students will leave with the concepts applicable to any firearm, as mindset being more important than the particular tool.
What to bring:
- Handgun. Center fire only, no rimfire guns.
- Three magazines or three speed loaders if using a revolver.
- 300 rounds minimum ammo.
- Proper clothing for the weather.
- Snacks. lunch and plenty of water.
- Please clean your gun in advance of the course or bring your gun cleaning kit with you.
- Notebook and pen.
- Eye and ear protection.
- Sunscreen, hats, long sleeves shirts, long pants, training shoes.
- Belt, holster, magazine pouch or other means of carrying additional ammunition weapon cleaning equipment.
- Gloves and elbow pad- optional.

0930 Legal foundations for self-defense both in the home and general. Discussion of “Castle Doctrine” and it’s role in home defense. Discussion of structure composition and ballistic impact predictions.
1030 Firearm retrieval and loading as needed. Designation of house occupant roles.
1130 Move to barn for interior building movements. Lunch
1200 Principles of building movements. Movement to contact versus shelter in place versus family consolidations.
1400 First Aid for GSW/Traumatic injuries.
1530 Response to Law Enforcement and other First Responders.
1600 Q and A and close.

Mike Lazarus holds 27 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, as well as 19 years SWAT including sniper, assaulter, team sergeant, FBI certified firearm instructor, MP5 and Sub Machine gun instructor, Defensive tactics instructor, Police Academy instructor, 13 years of experience in the US Army with multiple overseas deployments. Airborne, SOTIC, PSD, SRT, small arms armorer, various other military schools, Faculty member in California State University, Northridge and Ventura College. Hobbies include outdoor sports, hunting, competitive shooting.
Ron Clayton is currently employed with a local Sheriff’s Department with 25 years of experience as a law enforcement officer, with a varied list of assignments including SWAT, FTO, Patrol, Detectives and Academy Instructor. He is a FBI certified firearm instructor, California POST Rifle instructor, Defensive Tactics instructor and Stop the Bleed instructor.
Ron recently retired from the California Air National Guard after 22 years of service (Active and Reserve) including 4 deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. During his deployments, he was assigned as a Dedicated Marksman and Combat LifeSaver. While at home station, Ron taught M4 rifle, M9 handgun, and M870 shotgun, Urban Environment Tactics, Concealed Carry, Trauma Care and Combatives. As a member of the California Emergency Response and Force Protection Training Cadre, Ron assisted in developing the training curriculum for National Guard members responding to civil disturbances and natural disasters. He also was the lead instructor to Ukraine in the National Guard’s Partnership for Peace program, sharing western style Law Enforcement and Tactics to the Ukraine military.
