California Tactical Academy offers Tactical & Competition Training Courses at the largest Outdoor Shooting range in Los Angeles for Beginners, Intermediate and Advanced Shooters. Learn and Enjoy Shooting Sports with Your Family & Friends.
Not too long ago, the FBI released a fairly comprehensive study of Active Shooter incidents over a time
period of several years. There is a lot to unpack in the document, being about 30 pages long, but one
thing that stands out to us, at California Tactical Academy, is the location of most of the active shooter
events. It should come as no surprise that most active shooter events occurred at “Gun Free” zones.
Here at CTA, we knew this and some years back when we developed our Active Shooter class, we built it
around this salient point.
I have seen many Active Shooter classes in the market and many of them are well taught by competent
instructors. But they are frequently built around the idea that the student will draw their gun and
intercede. Our class is built on different assumptions. The CTA class is geared towards the student who
does not, for whatever reason, have a firearm with them. We offer plenty of shooting classes (after all,
we are a shooting range) that can help you develop the skills to make that difficult shot. Our Active
Shooter class is not one of those. We opted to give the student the skills to survive an Active Shooter,
and position themselves to save lives, despite the lack of firearm.
We invite you to join us as we resume our Active Shooter classes in the coming months. Our class is
taught by subject matter experts who have responded to Active Shooter events as they unfolded. Our
instructors are defensive tactics instructors who have extensive, real world experience with using empty
hand techniques to resolve complex force scenarios. Every technique we teach, we have actually used
on the streets. We strive to give our students the best chance of survival despite not having a firearm.
As armed citizens, we often focus on the use of firearms, empty hand, edged and improvised weapons
to defend ourselves. These are worthy skills to pursue. However, we often fail to either deeply examine
the laws of self-defense, or grasps the concepts and legal ramifications of using our skills. This seminar
will discuss the laws of self-defense, what might happen following your defending yourself, and how to
best protect yourself from criminal charges and civil suits following your actions. Surviving the fight is
often just the first step. This seminar is delivered in a classroom and lecture format over approximately 3 hours although it can run slightly longer depending on student questions.
The instructor for this class has over 3 decades of law enforcement experience, has testified as an expert witness in police use of force cases, is a college professor, and has a law degree.
Force application probabilities.
Black letter law regarding self-defense.
California specific law regarding self-defense.
Castle doctrine.
Defender actions that influence the probability/outcome of trials.
This 60 to 90 Minute seminar will review the principles and best practices for Dry Fire/Practice for shooters. The purpose is to give shooters a road map of how they can safely practice at home, without ammunition, to improve their shooting. This is suitable for pistol, rifle and shotgun shooters and all three systems will be discussed. Students will leave with the ability to create their own dry practice program to best achieve their goals.
This class is not just a tactics class. The goal of this class is to give the student the mental tools and response skills for an intruder in the home, or attempting to enter your home. Attendees should be familiar with Basic Handgun skills and be a comfortable and safe shooter. Advanced shooting skills are not required for this class. While this class will utilize a handgun for instructional purposes, students will leave with the concepts
This two- or three-hours event will focus on one specific drill, selected to help the shooter diagnose and advance their skills. The drill will be shot multiple times with focused, instructor-based coaching as well as self-coaching ques provided. Each drill will have measurable goals so the student can repeat the drill on their own, and track progress. The drills will change with each session so if you attend one day, the next event will have a different exercise. While the time is open, and shooters may stay for as long as the session runs, or leave early, they need to be at the range at the start time for a safety briefing and general information. Attendees will likely be more limited by ammunition than time constraints. We recommend bringing 150 rounds or more. You may not shoot all of it, but you won’t want to run short if you are making solid improvements. Attendees must have completed at least a basic firearms course at CTA and should be comfortable with using a holster.
This class will focus on the foundational skills used to clear rooms, buildings, and other structures. The techniques taught in this class are all well vetted and currently in use in a variety of venues by armed professionals. This is not a shooting course; this is strictly a tactics and movement course. The techniques taught in this class can be applied to home defense, active shooter, executive protection, and any other endeavor where one might be called upon to either find a threat, or ensure an area is safe. We will focus on both single person as well as team tactics. For students looking to improve their shooting skills, we recommend the basic and advanced handgun or rifle classes.
